Model and DJ Alexandra Richards, the gorgeous love child of Keith Richards and Patti Hansen, was in town yesterday as the new face of Voodoo. I got to spend a little time with her at Bondi Icebergs, not only did I get to do a mini shoot, I also quizzed her about all things music and fashion.
I had no idea how to approach my interview with Alexandra, I knew she’d be wearing killer Voodoo tights, but that was about it. I desperately didn’t want to loose my cool by asking tons of questions about her Rolling Stones dad or her super model mum. In the end I settled on 10 simple favourites questions, I asked her about her childhood, about music, fashion and honestly by the end of those 10 questions, I had completely fallen in love with her. Alexandra is totally down to earth, despite her bombshell appearance, she’s a girl who loves her work and takes it seriously while having fun. Amazed already? Well you’d better read on…
Favourite childhood memory
I used to live in Jamaica, that was such a big part of my upbringing til I was 5, though I can only really remember it through the photographs, there are certain moments that I have, like just being by the ocean, being by the beach, hearing the trees sway and the crickets, it brings back a really great memory for me.
Favourite thing about your dad
His generosity. He’s a very giving man and it goes without saying that he’s just such an inspiration for my family, for his friends and everybody he works with. He’s a good man.
Favourite place you’ve been to
Cuixmala, Mexico. I just went in February and I’ve been to a lot of beautiful places, but this one just topped it all. It was maybe like Capri, with water so clear you can see through to the ground, it’s just a beautiful day every single day you were there. I had lots of friends and family with me, so I’d have to say Cuixmala, Mexico.
Favourite thing about living in New York
I’m a home girl, because I’m close to my friends and family, but I also love the energy, it’s the possibilities that are out there when you are living in New York. It doesn’t sleep, the city, and there’s always something you can do.
Favourite visual artists
I have a couple, for painters, I love Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, whom I studied in art school. I guess from today, I like this girl called Austin, she’s from New York and she does a lot of pop art and Baron Von Fancy, he’s incredible with what he does with resin. I like those kinds of artworks that you can look at and just stare at and there’s always something different about it every time you pass by.
Favourite thing about creating your own art
It’s the therapeutic part of it, it’s something I do in my down time when I’m not DJing or modelling and there’s just something really peaceful about it, that it’s mine and nobody can tell me what to do or how to feel, it’s just me being me.
Favourite music to listen to on a lazy Sunday
Etta James for sure, The Heptones, which is a reggae artist, my favourite. I love Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, old school. It’s Sunday, I like to lay in bed, just not do anything, detach from the world. Sunday is the day to be productive but in your own space, I love doing laundry, it’s very therapeutic for me too, cup of coffee, making my own breakfast, it’s just my day.
Favourite music to play while DJing
This is a tough one for me. My genre goes from electronic, to my favourite rock and roll, Elvis Presley, I also play a lot of Pharrell Williams, Daft Punk and Cut Copy, so that’s a little mix of electronic and rock. I love to play Prince, I love my Prince, that gets everybody going, Kiss and Raspberry Beret and what always gets people in the mood is Could You Be Love by Bob Marley, they get that happy feeling, like with the Pharrell song. It’s a little mix and match.
Favourite fashion labels
Theory, Michael Kors, Helmut Lang, I’m wearing Haryono Setiadi today, so he’s my new favourite. Day to day, I love my Levis, I love my Converse, J Brand is great. I’m a jeans and t-shirt girl, I’m always ready on the go. To dress up, it’ll be Italian designers like Dolce & Gabanna, there’s just something about their sexy cuts, Zac Posen also does an amazing cut for women.
Favourite thing about modelling
The traveling. It’s not as beautiful as it seems, it’s a lot of work, a lot of traveling, a lot of planes. Even when you are in front of the camera, you are dealing with the photographer, the production and so many other people, it is kind of mind boggling, but at the end of the day, you get to go to these amazing places, like I’m here in Australia and you do find your down time and you can really get to know the people and culture where ever you go.
