I have to be honest here, the first time I met Gary Bigeni, it was a bit of a shock. If you don’t know, even though you should know, Gary is a Sydney based womenswear designer, his label has become the epitome of luxe minimalist draping. His clothes are luxurious to wear, strikes the perfect balance between feminine and masculine, the draping makes you look and feel sexy without baring lots of skin. So it really was quite a shock when I saw his outrageously loud personal style! How can Gary’s personal aesthetics be so different to his designing aesthetics? Maybe I should interview him about it! Lots of people claim to love loud pattern clashing styles, but few are as brave as Gary, with his always electric coloured hair, penchant for creepers, Gary sure stands out in a crowd.
I found my perfect “work” dress at a Gary Bigeni’s sale recently. I discovered shooting at various events, that there seems to be a photographers’ uniform, black jeans and black shirt and black big ass camera bag. While it’s perfectly functional, but it isn’t chic, totally not chic! My solution, a simple black dress with unique details. It was one of those occasions where I knew exactly what I wanted, yet I had no idea what I wanted. After months of scouring boutiques, department stores and online, I turned up with nothing. In the end, Gary’s signature draping proved to be the perfect simple detail. This dress is fast becoming my uniform, a chic uniform!

This summer in Sydney has been sporadic, it’s kind of like having a mood swing, going from rainy days to super hot super humid days with the blink of an eye. When it is finally hot and sunny, we all long to lounge on the beach and eat bowls of sorbet, when you put that image in my head, all I want to wear is white and blue. Something about that combination, so summery, so classic, yet still always fresh and modern. So on Australian day, I was in Bondi (just like everyone else in Sydney + the entire backpacker population of the world), to escape the humidity I ducked into Bondi’s great selection of airconed boutiques. Where I spotted these two wearing white and blue, matching perfectly, even down to the white canvas shoes!

Check out this arm party! It really is so summery and perfect, an assortment of silver bangles, bracelets and rings, but it’s that fluro pink one which brings it all home.

I love Surry Hills style. You may call it hipster style or whatever and I know there’s a kind of stigma with that, but to be able to have your own eclectic style and dress the way you want is a luxury. I love Surry Hills because it fosters a creative environment where youngsters are free to play and dress up.
Of course I found this young gent in Surry Hills and his style is awesome. The silver metal tipped shirt, big buckle belt, his grandfather’s Rolex and red suitcase! Surry Hills through and through.
I didn’t realise it at the time, but looking at the photos now, they really remind me of one of my favourite films, The Darjeeling Limited. There’s something about his very coordinated outfit, but most of all, it’s that suitcase!
