New York is a fashion hot house. From its designer houses to infamous runway shows, it produces on trends styles… But I’m here to show you the most spectacular fashion show that New York has to offer – its sidewalks!

New York City has multiple personality syndrome. From uptown to downtown, East Village to West Village, Soho to Noho, its boroughs and neighbourhoods couldn’t be more different. Each has its own unique characteristics, personality, lifestyle, budget, and of course, fashion sense. Dress the wrong way in the wrong neighbourhood? You might just look like a UFO (UnFashionable Object). Which is why I’m here to give you a sneak peek of all the New York fashion precincts I plan to cover as Nokia & Elle’s Next Style Correspondent!
First stop: the Upper East Side
From 59th St onwards is the Upper East Side. And it doesn’t have upper in its name for no reason. You know Serena, Blair, and all the upper crust socialites from Gossip Girl? Yep, this is their hood. Grand dames of society, my little darlings.

North, to the Bronx
Now let’s move up the map a bit, over the river to the Bronx. Long overlooked, Bronx distills the essence of old New York that many other parts of the city have lost. Considered as the most culturally diverse area in the whole US, it’s heady, stubborn, old fashioned, but oh so cool!

Down to West Village
Past the more commercial Chelsea and Greenwich Village is West Village. Home to artists and the gay community, West Village is just about everyones’ best friend. She’s like that girl everyone knows – laidback, pretty, and with a great sense of humour. Envy her? Want to be her? I know I do.

Over to LES
Ding ding! This is the last stop for Manhattan on the 4 train, this is the infamous Lower East Side. Smell the air, smell that grunge! This is hipster central, where starving artists and musicians live above Chinese grocery stores having all night jam sessions. Think you’re creative? Then show the city what you’ve got!

Over the bridge to Brooklyn
Last but definitely not least is Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s the humble quiet achiever in our tour that’s had a few heydays but still struggles on. More relaxed than Manhattan island, it’s where families, designers and average New Yorkers (as average as they can be) all happily co-exist. The result? It’s hip without trying to be. And it’s also the best place in NYC for vintage shopping!

So guys and girls, that brings us to the end of our virtual open top bus trip for now. But remember, fashion shows don’t just happen at fashion week, inside castles, palaces or trendy warehouses. Millions of fashion shows are happening everyday, right around you.
So go on. Find your New York fashion fit, hit the sidewalk. Head high, big strides, and who knows – I might just come and take your street style snap!
